Oils - ‘Earthly Vistas’
A 35 minute performance art film, to accompany the release of Oils’ second album, ‘Earthly Vistas’.
About a year ago I sat in Oils' studio while he was working on his second album, and watched him building ambient electronic tracks live, layering samples, textures and melodies into this hypnotic atmosphere in the room. It gave me an idea to put him and his instruments into big, weird spaces and play music, using light to transform the rooms fluidly with the music. So the idea of the film is trying to capture the atmosphere that this type of music creates in an environment - the sensory relationship between sound and space.
It visualises the creative process of ambient electronic music, showing Oils creating and performing four tracks live, each in a different room within a derelict leisure centre: a half-empty Olympic-sized swimming pool, a disused gymnasium, a training pool and a final light experiment with animated projections. The concept for the last song has now become the basis for Oils’ live show.
